Guitar Sonatas and Fantasies
Performed by students and staff, Directed by Dr Jonathan Paget
Fantasy and sonata represent two polar opposites of the musical spectrum: 'fantasy' evokes freedom and imagination, and 'sonata' embodies abstraction and sounding structure. Through composers spanning the Renaissance to the present day, this program explores the various ways guitar composers have followed either their heads or their hearts. 7.30pm Thurs

Guitarstrophe! - Caroline Binsted [Music Director]
Please join us on Thursday 8th September, 7pm in Callaway Music Auditorium for a concert to celebrate all that John has done for music in WA! We are delighted that John's former student Craig Odgen, will be flying in from the UK to perform at this special event!

John has taught Guitar at the University of Western Australia since 1982 and in Schools across Perth since 1971. Across more than four and a half decades John has inspired thousands of students, from beginners in Year 6, right through to advanced tertiary students, many of whom have gone on to enjoy successful careers as professional musicians and teachers.
John's most notable students include classical-FM chart topping artist Craig Ogden, Dr Jonathan Padget, Milica Davies (née Ilic), Ruth Lenz and Nathan Sinclair.
John, who taught himself electric guitar before falling in love with classical guitar, pioneered the development of the classical guitar group tuition program that is still taught in WA Schools today and has led many guitar ensembles including the UWA School of Music Guitar Ensemble and Guitarstrophe! which he founded in 1974.
John was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from UWA in 2005 in recognition of his services to teaching and mentoring in WA.
The School of Music would like to thank the Royal Over-Seas League Visiting Artist Program for supporting Craig's visit to Perth.

Attendance is free and your can reserve your tickets by emailing concerts@uwa.edu.au
or calling 6488 7836.
Please share with anyone who knows John and would like to come along!

We are looking to hear from any of John's former students, colleagues etc so if you have any anecdotes or messages that you would like to share, please email these though to concerts@uwa.edu.au.

Shakespeare and the electric guitar with James Ledger I was commissioned to write a work for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. The resultant work "Hollow Kings", is a four-movement work that explores and responds to speeches given by four of Shakespeare's kings. The orchestration includes electric guitar. I thought of this instrument as a modern-day lute, an instrument that was symbolically significant in the Elizabethan era. In the work, I have drawn parallels with the modern-day instrument and it's ancestor through references in Shakespeare's plays. 5-6pm Tues
