Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s newest, most intimate live music venues.
Jonathan Paget Jonathan joins the emerging young string quartet, the Hyde String Quartet, comprising players currently studying at WAAPA. They perform a work the quartet recently performed with leading Australian Guitarist, Karin Schaupp.

Semi-final
The Semi-final is on Thursday Nov 25 before a judging panel and is closed to the public. Each of the 14 semi-finalists will be playing 2 pieces of music:
Zapateado by Regino Sainz De La Maza, and
a free choice piece of max length 6 mins.
Final
The best 6 (possibly less) as judged in the semi-final will compete in the final round on Sunday Nov 28 in the Dunstan Playhouse from 10am onwards. The Final is open to the public and is free of charge. Each finalist will play 2 pieces of music:
One piece composed pre 1850, and
One piece composed post 1850.

Part 2: Aleksandr Tsiboulski in conversation with Mairi Nicolson.
The multi-award winning guitarist, at present a Faculty member of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and whose 2010 CD "Australian Guitar Music" was nominated for an ARIA Best Classical Album, discusses the influence of Segovia on guitar playing today, Segovia's repertoire and significant collaboration with the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce and talks of the challenges facing young guitarists. A passionate and expressive style coupled with a formidable technique has garnered attention for Simon Powis as a talented soloist, chamber musician and innovator. After completing his studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Powis traveled extensively throughout Europe to study with some of the world’s most renowned virtuosos. In 2006 Powis was invited to undertake a Masters of Music at Yale University on a full scholarship and upon completing this degree he was accepted as the first guitarist in over two decades to undertake doctoral studies at Yale. Powis’s openness to innovation is exhibited by his devotion to performing new works. In the past years he has premiered over thirty new works on the concert stage.

There were 52 Ensembles with 23 Directors and 450 Players from Gov't and private schools. The Festival is a co-operative endeavour organised by the School of Instrumetnal Music and the Classic Guitar Society.
Every ensembles receives feedback on their performance, a certificate and one of these 4 evaluations; Outstanding, Excellent, Merit and Participation.
Karin Schaupp said about the festival; "It's fantablulous and outstanding. My job as adjudicator is hard but it is lots of fun. It is wonderful and so inspiring to see and hear such an impressive number of young guitarists."

Recital
The concert features the West Australian premiere of "The Butterfly and the Phoenix" for guitar and choir, by acclaimed Brisbane composer Mary Doumany. This piece concerns the 2008 Victorian Black Saturday bushfires, and promises to be a truly inspirational and moving account. Karin will be joined by the Winthrop Singers appearing courtesy of the University of WA School of Music and directed by Dr Nicholas Bannan. A highlight of the program will be Maximo Diego Pujol's fabulous hommage to the tango, the "Tangata de agosto" for guitar and string quartet, in collaboration with WAAPA’s own Hyde Quartet. Karin also plays Spanish duets with Jonathan Paget, WAAPA staffmember, and poetic works for solo guitar by Australian composers.

ECHOES OF DJANGO
Echoes of Django started as two musicians (French guitarist Romain Guery and Australian guitarist Aaron Deacon) performing old Django Gypsy jazz. Throughout the busking sessions in Fremantle, their music began to grow, resulting in new compositions with hot improvisation and creative ideas.
