The Guitar in Dance and Dream

Music Director: Jonathan Paget Performed by: Classical Guitar students, with special guest artists Silver Sands Guitar Trio
The guitar has always belonged to the people; across its history of many centuries, the guitar has continued to occupy the space between both popular and elite. Much of its music is rooted in popular song and dance, but developed by its exponents with unusual artistry. A soft instrument, it cajoles us with its intimate tones, drawing us into its own interior dream world with its 'six silver moonbeams'. 7:30pm Wed

Derek Gripper
HEMISPHERES 11
MUSIC OF THE WORLD

Derek Gripper web page
Derek Gripper is a classical guitarist who has taken a unique path. As a South African classical musician he found limited by the music of the traditional classical guitar and so went on a journey through different musical styles, returning always to the guitar to find ways of bringing what he learned onto the instrument. It took Derek Gripper untold hours of painstaking work to transcribe note-for-note the complex compositions of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and find a way of playing them on classical six-string guitar. The results appeared on his ninth album, One Night on Earth, marking a meeting point of the written tradition of Western classical music and the oral tradition of the West African griots. Critical acclaim was quick to follow. Classical guitar legend John Williams said he thought it was "absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it". Toumani Diabaté himself asked for confirmation that it was indeed just one person playing one guitar. Both immediately invited Derek to collaborate with them after hearing his recording "One Night on Earth" and its follow up "Libraries on Fire" which won the Songlines Award for "Best Album Africa and Middle East." Derek performed with Williams in London's Shakespeare's Globe and King's Place, and with Diabaté and his Symetroc Orchestra at the Acoustik Festival Bamako, Mali. 8pm Wed

Kaki King Performs
"The Neck is Bridge to the Body"

"More than anything the process of creating this music has proven to me once again that the guitar really does the speaking, and I'm just the interpreter." -Kaki King
Provocative and moving, surprising and beautiful, "The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body" is Kaki King at her visionary best: deconstructing and redefining the role of solo instrumental artist through virtuoso technique, insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity. This groundbreaking new multi-media performance uses projection mapping to present the guitar as an ontological tabula rasa in a creation myth unlike any other, where luminous visions of genesis and death, textures and skins, are cast onto an Ovation Adamas 1581-KK Kaki King Signature 6-String Acoustic guitar customized specifically for this production.

The Light on the Edge:
a celebration of the works of
Phillip Houghton
Image description
Perth Guitar Quartet:
Melissa Fitzgerald, Jameson Feakes
Chris Kotchie, Robert Parker

The Perth Guitar Quartet were shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of Phillip Houghton at the end of September this year. While tribute concerts have taken place on the east coast, we have decided to hold our own on the west coast.
This special evening will feature a range of Houghton's works, from solos through to quartets, all presented by the Perth Guitar Quartet, and featuring guest artist Shayne Harris [flute].
Come and be transported into the evocative sound world - an unmissable event.
