The UWA Guitar Studio celebrates the music of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos with a relay performance of his Twelve Etudes and Five Preludes. Written for the legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia, these works remain a cornerstone of the guitar repertoire, demanding both technical mastery and deep musical sensitivity. Rarely performed as complete sets, this program offers a sweeping journey through Villa-Lobos’ unique synthesis of Brazilian folk influences and European classical tradition, showcasing the expressive range of the guitar in the hands of UWA’s emerging performers.

35th WA CLASSICAL GUITAR ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL - 2025
Solo guitar section now included

Adjudicators = For the first time, guitar ensemble guru Paul Svoboda will be adjudicating at this year’s Guitar Ensemble Festival, together with Italian guitar virtuoso and composer Ermanno Brignolo.

Many ensembles involved

This event is run in partnership with the Education Dept and the WA Classical Guitar Society which was founded in 1960 to provide a vehicle for professional development, forums and master classes, a platform for performances of local, interstate and over seas artists, and the general promotion of the classical guitar throughout Western Australia.

The aims of the Festival are:-

To provide a performance opportunity for students (especially young students).
To give ensembles an opportunity to hear others perform.
To provide each ensemble with constructive comments from an informed adjudicator.
To present each ensemble with a certificate which recognises its participation.

No other event in WA involves the participation of any where near the number of guitarists who go in the Festival.
Ensembles involving hundreds of students!

Plucked string orchestras became a popular world-wide phenomenon in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Aping the traditions of Spanish students, these groups were known as ‘estudiantinas’ or alternatively as BMG (Banjo, Mandolin, and Guitar) clubs.

GUITAR PROGRAM
Accelerate! Guitars is UWA's elite performance training program de.signed for classical guitarists in Years 10–12 who are looking to take their playing to the next level! Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with Chair of Guitar Dr Jonathan Fitzgerald, as well as some very special guests.
The program includes a wide-range of practical activities including workshops and masterclasses where participants will receive expert individualised input on their current repertoire, and hone their ensemble skills while rehearsing and performing with the UWA Conservatorium Guitar Ensemble.
The program will culminate in a public concert alongside emerging artists from the UWA Guitar Studio.
Places are strictly limited and entry is via audition. Full scholarships are provided so there is no cost to participants.

a brief portfolio/musical CV outlining your personal details like age, school, teacher etc. and your most significant musical achievements; grades, competitions, ensemble membership etc.

A West Australian virtuoso now based in Germany, Stephanie has earned both a Master’s and a Konzertexamen degree from the prestigious University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar. And many prestigious performance competitioins.
